San Antonio Wins After 25 Innings, 3 Days
SAN ANTONIO — What is believed to be the longest scoreless game in professional baseball history finally ended Saturday when Manny Francois’ bases-loaded single in bottom of the 26th inning gave the San Antonio Missions a 1-0 Texas League victory over the Jackson Mets.
The two Class AA teams resumed play Saturday after playing 25 scoreless innings Thursday night. The game was suspended at 2:30 a.m., CDT, Friday, 7 hours 10 minutes after it began.
After the Mets were retired in order in the top of the 26th, Walt McConnell singled with one out and moved to third base on a double by Luis Lopez. Manny Benitez was intentionally walked to load the bases for Francois, who ended it with a single up the middle off Met reliever Blaine Beatty.
“It was the quickest win I ever had,” San Antonio manager Kevin Kennedy said.
The estimated crowd of 3,300 cheered when McConnell crossed home plate. The victory went to Barry Wohler, who pitched the 25th inning Friday morning and the 26th inning Saturday.
The additional 13 minutes needed to settle the game Saturday extended the time of game to 7 hours 23 minutes, a Texas League record by 44 minutes.
