New Line of Useful Dimmers on Market
Dimmers are handy devices that can be useful in most homes.
In the room where the TV set is located, a dimmer can provide the right amount of light for viewing programs.
A dimmer can provide romantic dining akin to candlelight. It can provide minimum lighting in rooms not currently occupied, to conserving energy.
For computer use, where a minimum of light is desired, once again the dimmer fills the bill. And, when away from home, rooms can be lighted with a minimum of energy consumed, while at the same time giving the appearance that some one is at home.
Whatever its use, the dimmer replaces the conventional wall switch, and anyone with a screwdriver can install it. Usually, it comes with instructions, should they be needed.
It’s best to turn off the power before installation to avoid accidental shocks. If your circuit breaker or fuse box is marked for individual rooms, all the better. Then there is no need to turn off the power in other parts of the house.
Robertshaw Controls Co., well-known for its thermostats (featured in my Dec. 13, 1987, column), has introduced a new line of the dimmers for do-it-yourselfers. They are available in many home centers, hardware stores, building supply stores and electric appliance outlets.
Particularly easy to install because of their shallow housing depth are the toggle dimmers, for vlights controlled by a single on/off switch. They will be available in ivory, white, brown or a clear, lighted model that glows in the dark, making it easy to find at night.
Several varieties of knob dimmers are offered too. A push on/off dimmer is available as either a single pole or three-way model. The rotary knob is single pole only.
Prices for the toggle dimmers will range from $10.25 to $12.50. The rotary knob dimmers will sell in a price range of $6.50 to $9. Prices will vary with various retailers. It’s best to shop around if you want the best price, although all of the devices are inexpensive.
Robertshaw also has a new line of ceiling fan controls. The single pole version is available in either a 3-amp or 5-amp model. The three-way control is a 5-amp model.
All three allow the consumer to choose the exact fan speed desired, and all feature a low-end adjustment, which allows the fan’s lowest speed to be set at a desired level. There is also a combination ceiling fan speed control and light dimmer in a single pole version.
If your favorite store hasn’t stocked these products yet, ask about them. They are brand-new and should be in soon.
