South Korea’s opposition-dominated National Assembly approved the nomination of a new Supreme Court chief justice, three days after giving President Roh Tae Woo the first major embarrassment of his term by rejecting his first choice. Lee Il Kyu, 68, a Supreme Court judge under Presidents Park Chung Hee and Chun Doo Hwan, won quick and resounding approval from the assembly in a 275-14 vote. Chung Ki Seung, another Supreme Court justice under Chun, failed to win confirmation Saturday. It was the first time in the nation’s 40-year history that a president’s nominee had been rejected by the National Assembly.
