Local News in Brief : Cypress : Top Faculty Member at Cypress College Named
Charlene Felos, chairwoman of the Cypress College art department, has been named the college’s Outstanding Faculty Member for 1987-88.
Felos, who lives in Huntington Beach, was chosen by the college’s Academic Senate “to represent the excellence of the entire faculty.” She received a plaque and a $1,000 check from the Cypress College Foundation, the nonprofit, fund-raising arm of the community college.
Felos, who specializes in ceramics, began her teaching career at the college in 1969 and was named to head the department about a year ago.
She is researching lower firing temperatures for ceramics in laboratory tests. The experiments are to test the hypothesis that lower temperatures can be used to change color intensity of ceramics and also to reduce gas consumption of kilns by up to 50%.
William Parmenter, president of the Academic Senate, said Felos is an outstanding teacher.
“All one has to do is to look in on her classroom at all hours of the day and evening to see the enthusiasm she generates to her students through her varied approaches to instruction,” Parmenter said.
