Boys’ Athletes of the Week : BASEBALL
Damon Luban pitched a three-hitter last Wednesday as No. 1 Helix High School defeated Mt. Miguel, 11-2, to clinch at least a tie for the Grossmont League title.
Luban struck out 10 and improved his record to 10-1.
Cesar Gutierrez hit three home runs last Tuesday as Castle Park defeated Marian, 23-1, in a Metro Conference game.
Gutierrez, a senior third baseman who did not play last year, has five home runs and 31 runs batted in and is hitting over .480.

Patrick Henry junior Phil Smith, whose best 800-meter time a year ago was 2 minutes 6 seconds, ran 1:55.3 to win the City Eastern League championship Saturday at Balboa Stadium. “This year I thought Phil would go 1:56 to 1:58,” said Mike Cour, Patrick Henry’s distance coach. “I think he has the ability to go 1:49. He’s just learning how to run the event.”
