In other first-round games:

Banning 11, Birmingham 0--The Harbor League champion eliminated Birmingham and next plays top-seeded El Camino Real.

Kricket Kern (11-2), who struck out 10 and had a perfect game through four innings, notched a complete-game victory.

Sylmar 9, Verdugo Hills 2--The defending 4-A champion sputtered for the first three innings, then exploded for nine runs in the next three innings at Sylmar.

Deann Wright (12-7) allowed five hits, struck out four and walked four. Teammate Chris Parks was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and scored twice.

Sylmar (12-7), the North Valley League runner-up, plays Poly in the second round.

Poly 22, Kennedy 2--Jodi Soto and Jodi Camron combined for a seven-hitter and Lisa Diaz, Ana Perez and Nicole File each had at least three RBIs at Poly.

The Parrots became the first East Valley League team to win a playoff game in four years.

Narbonne 3, North Hollywood 0--The Huskies managed one hit--a single by Maia Sharp--and were eliminated at home.

Chatsworth 11, Van Nuys 6--Jennifer Mischler was 3 for 4 with two stolen bases and Christina Roopenian (14-2) pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as North Valley League champion Chatsworth won at home.

The Chancellors (14-2) play Narbonne in the second round.

San Fernando 7, Taft 2--The Toreadors outhit the Tigers, 14-7, but stranded 11 runners at Taft.

San Fernando (11-5) plays San Pedro in the second round.

San Pedro 18, Reseda 2--The Pilots scored 11 runs in the fifth inning to blow open a close contest at San Pedro.

Simi Lutheran 11, Shandon 10--Christy Teffeteller was 5 for 6 and drove in the winning run as Simi Lutheran became the first Heritage League team to win a Southern Section Small Schools playoff game in three years.
