In a bid to save Balboa Park land for open space, the San Diego City Council Monday rejected a city staff proposal to relocate the park’s maintenance service yard from the former landfill off Arizona Street to a site at the old Navy Hospital known as “the pit.”

The yard would have occupied 12 of the 34.5 acres that the Navy is giving the city as part of the land swap that allowed construction of the new Navy Hospital in Florida Canyon. The pit is north of the Pershing Drive freeway ramp and Interstate 5.

Council members instructed their staff to propose other sites where the maintenance service yard may be placed.
