College Spring Sports : CLU Advances to Title Game in Softball

Cal Lutheran moved into its first NAIA District championship game by sweeping a doubleheader from Southern Utah State in a regional playoff Friday at Cedar City, Utah.

Cal Lutheran (34-14) won the first game, 11-7, and the second, 5-3. The Regals play for the championship Thursday in Oklahoma City against an undetermined opponent.

DeeAndra Pilkington pitched 5 innings, striking out three, to earn the win in the opener. Cal Lutheran led, 9-0, after three innings.

Pilkington (11-5) also was 4 for 5, including a double and a triple, and scored four runs. Pilkington’s two-run single capped a five-run third inning for the Regals.

In the second game, Leslie Stevens pitched a complete game to improve her record to 11-1. She also was 3 for 3.

Stevens, Joy Fuller, Dani Piotrowski and Kelly Ingram all singled during Cal Lutheran’s three-run second inning. The Regals added two more in the third.

BASEBALL

Cal Poly Pomona 16, CS Northridge 4--Pomona clinched its sixth California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title with a win at home.

David Rice was tagged for 15 hits, but went the distance to improve to 5-7. Keith Barrett and Brian Greer each drove in three runs for Pomona, which scored four runs in both the first and second innings.

Northridge (20-33, 11-17 in conference games) plays host to Pomona in a doubleheader today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Missy Conn and Allison Kincaid of CSUN advanced to today’s doubles semifinals of the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships at Sonoma State.

Conn and Kincaid, who were ousted from singles competition on Thursday, won both their doubles matches Friday, earning All-American honors in the process. Players who advance to the national semifinals automatically receive All-American status.

The Northridge pair teamed to defeat Abilene Christian’s Lori Miller and Lynn Kniffen, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, in a first-round match, then upended Michelle Wrenn and Sandy Stace of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
