Grossmont Wins State Tennis Title
Wanda Yocom defeated Beth Conny, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles match and Grossmont College went on to a 6-0 victory over Modesto to win the California community college women’s tennis championship Thursday at Ventura College.
Grossmont (20-1-1) won all six singles matches in straight sets, and no player allowed more than two games in any one set.
The UC San Diego women’s tennis team, the defending NCAA Division III national champion and the top-seeded team, defeated Franklin and Marshall University (Pa.), 8-1, Thursday for third place in the NCAA Division III championships at Emory University in Atlanta.
UCSD (20-5) was upset by Kenyon College (Ohio), 5-4, late Wednesday night in the semifinals.
UCSD’s Christine Behrens won her first two singles matches in the individual tournament to advance to the final eight. Behrens and Rhonda Meier were defeated in their first-round doubles match.
SOFTBALL
U.S. International University, which beat five of the nation’s top 10 teams this season, was no match for No. 5-ranked Cal Poly Pomona as the host Broncos won a nonconference doubleheader, 5-0 and 3-1.
USIU finished 24-25. Cal Poly Pomona is 52-15.
