National League Roundup : Mets Rough Up Smith, Beat Astros

Tim Teufel hit a three-run double to tie the score in the ninth inning, and Kevin McReynolds delivered the winning run with a single in the 10th Wednesday night at Houston to give the New York Mets a 9-8 victory over the Houston Astros.

Gary Carter drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Dave Smith (1-2), and Howard Johnson followed with a single. Mickey Sasser forced Carter at third. McReynolds singled to left to drive in Johnson and make a winner of Terry Leach (1-0).

The game was expected to be a pitchers’ duel between 1986 Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott of Houston and 1985 Cy Young recipient Dwight Gooden. But the game quickly dissolved into a slugfest.

The Mets scored three runs in the ninth to tie the score, 8-8, saving Gooden (6-0) from incurring his first loss and preventing Scott from earning his fifth victory.

Scott went six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, and Gooden yielded seven runs on seven hits in six innings.

The Astros led, 8-5, but Smith surrendered the three-run double to Teufel. Darryl Strawberry hit a two-run homer in the fourth to become the first major leaguer with 10 homers this season.

Chicago 1, San Diego 0--Greg Maddux pitched a three-hitter, and Mark Grace scored on Vance Law’s suicide squeeze with one out in the 10th inning as the Cubs edged the Padres at Chicago.

Ryne Sandberg led off the 10th with a triple off the left-field wall, and Lance McCullers (0-3) intentionally walked Mark Grace and Andre Dawson to load the bases. Reliever Mark Davis then induced Rafael Palmeiro to bounce into a fielder’s choice, forcing Sandberg at home for the first out.

Law bunted toward first, and John Kruk fielded the ball, but his throw home was late.

Maddux (6-2) struck out eight, walked none and retired the last 20 batters he faced in earning his second shutout and fourth complete game.

San Francisco 5, St. Louis 4--Kevin Mitchell hit a home run with one out in the 16th inning as the Giants beat the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Mitchell’s homer, his fifth of the season and the third of the game for the Giants, came off Bob Forsch (2-3), the fifth Cardinal pitcher. Atlee Hammaker (3-0), the fourth San Francisco pitcher, pitched the last three innings of the 4-hour 48-minute game.

The Cardinals, who stranded 19 runners, tied the score in the eighth with a run off starter Mike LaCoss. Luis Alicea led off with a double and went to third on a fly-out. Craig Lefferts relieved and struck out pinch-hitter Jose Oquendo, but Vince Coleman hit a run-scoring triple.

Philadelphia 4, Cincinnati 3--Mike Young singled home Von Hayes with one out in the 11th inning as the Phillies edged the Reds in a rain-delayed game at Philadelphia.

Hayes led off the 11th with a single off John Franco (0-3) and went to second on an infield single by Chris James. Bill Almon sacrificed, before Steve Jeltz was walked intentionally to load the bases. Young singled to center to make a winner of Kent Tekulve (1-3).

Atlanta 3, Montreal 2--Gary Roenicke doubled in two runs and scored on Gerald Perry’s single in a three-run sixth inning as the Braves beat the Expos at Atlanta.

The Braves won two of three from Montreal, the first time this season that Atlanta has won a series. The Braves (9-21) have the league’s worst record.
