Softball : El Toro Beats Capistrano Valley in 18th

Dawn Kluegel had an RBI single in the 18th inning to break a 3-3 tie as El Toro High School defeated Capistrano Valley, 5-3, in a South Coast League softball game Friday at Capistrano Valley. The game lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Kluegel’s single scored Patty Skidmore, who had doubled to open the inning. Kluegel finished with four hits, including a two-run home run in the third inning.

Page Lauby (5-6) pitched a 4-hitter with 24 strikeouts in 18 innings for El Toro (16-8 overall, 3-3 in league play). Jennifer Smith (14-5) allowed 10 hits and had 14 strikeouts in 18 innings for Capistrano Valley (3-3, 15-5).

Capistrano Valley scored three runs in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.

In another South Coast League game:

Irvine 4, Dana Hills 3--Ha Sherwood had three hits and improved her batting average to .410 for host Irvine (10-11, 2-4). Jennifer Bundage (8-10) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and also stole home for Irvine. Dana Hills is 5-12 and 1-5.

In the Orange League:

Western 3, Magnolia 2 (14 innings)--Dena Petersen scored the winning run on an error with one out in the 14th for host Western (12-8, 6-0). Petersen (4-2) pitched 14 innings, striking out 6, for the victory. Ivy Pinkerton went 3 for 6 with an RBI for Western.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 5, Saddleback 2--Jayme Ondracek (9-2) allowed one hit in four innings for visiting Tustin (14-3, 11-0), which leads University by a game.

University 17, Newport Harbor 1 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Michele Bell went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and six RBIs for host University (12-5, 10-1) in a game that was called after five innings. Shareen Patton threw a two-hitter, striking out 10.

Estancia 7, Corona del Mar 2--Kristen Williams had a three-run triple in the fourth inning for host Estancia (6-8, 6-5). Kellie Kane had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Estancia. Ann Graham (5-5) was the winner.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 1, Edison 0 (9 innings)--Julie Muche (4-2) threw a no-hitter, striking out six and walking one, to lead host Marina (9-9, 2-3). Liberty Brewster drove home the winning run with squeeze bunt. Terry Carpenter threw a two-hitter, striking out 16, but took the loss.

In the Express League:

Harbor Christian 19, Claremont 16--Michele Dern had two hits, scored a run and had four RBIs for visiting Claremont (4-3, 1-3), which committed 11 errors. Barbara Dolan had two hits, scored two runs and had two stolen bases for Claremont. Harbor Christian is 2-3 in overall and in league.

In the Sunrise League:

Rosary 11, Sacred Heart of Mary 0 (6 innings, mercy rule)--Jennifer Salazar (7-3) pitched a one-hitter and had two hits and an RBI for host Rosary (13-6, 6-0).

In a nonleague game:

Trabuco Hills 13, St. Margaret’s 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Emily Leckey threw a no-hitter to lead host Trabuco Hills (9-11).
