Local News in Brief : GOP Debate Called Off
The League of Women Voters has canceled a planned June 4 debate between Republican presidential candidates in Torrance after Kansas Sen. Robert Dole dropped out of the GOP presidential race.
“The debate has been officially, finally and forever canceled,” League spokeswoman Janice Kaplan said in Washington.
Even before Dole’s announcement on Tuesday, Kaplan said League officials had decided to scrap Republican debates in Torrance and Rochester, N.Y., because Vice President George Bush had declined to participate.
The decision to drop the debates had been expected since Bush swept the March 8 Super Tuesday primaries and opened a commanding lead over Dole in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
The League is still planning to hold a nationally televised debate among Democratic presidential contenders at El Camino College in Torrance on June 5, two days before the California presidential primary.
