Tanzania Priest Sentenced for Possessing 224 Tusks

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Father Fidelis Erio, a Roman Catholic priest, was sentenced to one day in jail at Mtwara in southern Tanzania for unlawful possession of 224 elephant tusks.
The tusks, valued at $100,000, were found in a store at his church compound in the capital, Dar es Salaam, last May. The priest, who was sentenced on Saturday, had denied the tusks were his.
