NHL Roundup : Gretzky Has Just an Assist in Oiler Win

The National Hockey League scoring title that he has won for seven consecutive seasons is rapidly slipping away from Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers.

Gretzky, used sparingly since a knee injury in midseason sidelined him for a dozen games, had only an assist Friday night at Edmonton in the Oilers’ 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Gretzky trails Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux by 14 points with eight regular-season games remaining.

In a likely preview of the opening round of Stanley Cup competition, the Oilers’ line led by Mark Messier dominated the Jets.

Messier set up two scores for Glenn Anderson as the Oilers took charge after the Jets’ Dale Hawerchuk scored his 44th goal 77 seconds into the game.

The Oilers will be trying to win their fourth championship in the last five years.

But goaltender Kelly Hrudey, in a spectacular performance, stopped the last 35 Washington shots. He and his teammates stopped the Capitals’ last eight power plays, the final one in the last 71 seconds of overtime.
