Local News in Brief : Ike Turner Found Guilty
Veteran rhythm and blues musician Ike Turner was convicted Friday on two felony cocaine charges but was cleared of possessing the drug for sale.
Turner, 56, of Los Angeles, the former husband of pop star Tina Turner, was arrested in August by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who said he was driving erratically when they found 5.6 grams of rock cocaine in his car.
Santa Monica Superior Court jurors deliberated four hours before finding Turner guilty of simple cocaine possession and transportation, but not of possessing the drug for sale.
The morning verdict preceded another scheduled Turner court appearance on separate drug charges. He was scheduled to appear in Pasadena Superior Court on charges that he tried to sell cocaine to undercover detectives in 1985.
A search of his apartment yielded $16,000 worth of cocaine, Pasadena police said.
Sentencing in the Santa Monica conviction was scheduled for April 15.
