GOP Opposes Use of State Funds to Counsel Gay Students
I was disappointed to read of Assemblywoman Marian LaFollette’s (R-Northridge) attack on the Los Angeles Unified School District’s counseling program for gay and lesbian students (Metro, March 11). Her attempt to prevent the school district from assisting gay students is not in the best interests of these young people who are in a very difficult life situation.
I attended Venice High School from 1960 to 1963. There was no “Project 10” then and I was cut off from understanding my existing homosexual feelings. Although I finished high school, within a year and a half I had quit college in an attempt to deal with this “terrible secret.” After several years of struggle and a great deal of self-loathing, I was able to return to school and begin a productive life.
If there had been a Project 10 for me, I would not have lost those years of my life. Because I believe Fairfax High School teacher and counselor Virginia Uribe is helping students, I have consistently supported her work. Both she and her principal should be congratulated for providing positive adult guidance to students who are fighting to achieve self-respect.
