Costa Mesa : Police Seek Aid in Theft of Social Security Checks
Authorities on Thursday asked Costa Mesa area residents whose Social Security checks were stolen earlier this month from a postal carrier’s car to call police to aid in prosecuting those responsible for the thefts.
“We estimate between 50 and 100 people lost their checks,” Costa Mesa Police Detective Jerry Holloway said.
On March 3, two men stole an estimated 1,000 pieces of mail after smashing a window in a Postal Service car near Cheyenne Street and Lincoln Way, in the northern part of the city.
Police have arrested a woman in the Palmdale area who tried to cash one of the stolen checks with false identification, Holloway said. “We know more checks will be attempted to be cashed,” he said. “We’re trying to find the victims so we can prosecute.”
Holloway said anyone missing a Social Security check for the month of March should call police at (714) 754-5294.
