* 1/2 “Tough Guys Don’t Dance.” Media. $89.95.

This quasi-attempt at black comedy, starring Ryan O’Neal as a failed alcoholic writer who gets caught up in a murder mystery, is more of a movie than any of author Norman Mailer’s three previous films (his 1971 “Maidstone” was like a smudged four-hour Rorschach test). Still, it was bad enough to challenge “Ishtar” and “Leonard Part 6” on many critics’ 1987 Worst 10 Lists. It’s a good party video, though. See if you can guess when you’re laughing with the movie and when you’re laughing at it. Tough guys don’t dance, and those with any sense don’t direct, either.
