Girls’ Athletes of the Week : BASKETBALL
Nikki Gannon, one of the younger players on San Pasqual High School’s team, showed she can play with the savvy of a senior during Southern California Regional play last week.
Tuesday, Gannon came off the bench to score nine points in San Pasqual’s 38-32 victory against Helix.
In Saturday’s final against Palos Verdes, Gannon hit three three-pointers to help her team rally from a 13-4 deficit. But Gannon never scored again as Palos Verdes won, 44-33, ending San Pasqual’s season at 28-3.
Gannon, a 5-foot 3-inch sophomore, also helped San Pasqual’s soccer team win the San Diego Section title this year.
SOFTBALL
Dawn Wood pitches at least six nights a week, and it shows.
Wood, a junior at Castle Park High School, began the season with a no-hitter, striking out 14 and walking non. She was a throwing error away from a perfect game, beating Mission Bay, 5-0, and was 1 for 2 at the plate.
“She practices, and it shows,” said Tim Tyler, Castle Park coach. “Keep your eyes on her.”
Wood was the Metro Conference player of the year as a freshman, and last season led Castle Park to a tie for second and a playoff appearance.
