Guadalajara Edges Honduras, 1-0, in Soccer in Front of 9,000
Demetrio Madero scored a goal early in the second half to give a Guadalajara club team a 1-0 victory over the Honduran national team in an exhibition soccer match Tuesday in front of an estimated 9,000 fans in Santa Ana Stadium.
Madero’s goal, which was scored with 10 minutes played in the period, was set up by Manuel Lopez, who maneuvered past a string of Honduran defenders and then passed the ball to Madero, who lined his shot past lunging goalkeeper Julio Arzu.
Madero’s shot was one of a series of scoring chances both teams had during the course of the contest. Ten minutes after the goal, Guadalajara’s Nestor de la Torre forced Arzu to make a diving save of his shot after taking pass from Lopez deep in the Honduran penalty area.
Two other chances to score occurred during a tightly fought first half. Guadalajara lost an opportunity to score the game’s first goal midway in the period when Luis Valdez’s breakaway shot was deflected by a Honduran defender away from the net.
The Honduran team, which is hoping for a berth in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, got its best chance to score with 10 minutes left before halftime when Javier Flores fired a low shot that forced goalie Javier Ledezma to go down to his knees to make the save.
Honduras did not make the World Cup competition two years ago in Mexico.
Guadalajara, which will play the U.S. national team on April 23 in Santa Ana Stadium, has six players who will represent Mexico in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Besides De la Torre and Ledezma, the Guadalajaran Olympians are De la Torre’s cousin, Jose Manuel de la Torre, Benjamin Galindo, Guillermo Mendizabel and Javier Aguirre.
Arzu, who kept Honduras in the game with his second-half save, played on the 1982 Honduran national team that played in the World Cup that year in Spain.
