Prep Baseball : Servite Plays the Numbers to Upset Esperanza
Servite High School scored 3 runs in the third inning and 4 in the fourth and went on to defeat Esperanza, 8-3, Tuesday in a nonleague baseball game at Esperanza.
Jim Berry led off the third with a solo home run and Brian Criss added a two-run double in the same inning for Servite. Greg Coleman had a two-run double in the fourth inning for Servite (4-2). Andy Crogan (2-0) had seven strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
Doug Saunders hit a home run for Esperanza (4-3).
In other nonleague games:
El Dorado 11, Valencia 4--Kevin Schula and Eddie Keller hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning for host El Dorado. Chris Facione and Greg Fife had three hits and scored two runs each for El Dorado (7-1). Alan Castellano hit two home runs and Mike Edwards one for Valencia.
Katella 6-6, Foothill 0-8--Alan Acosta threw a one-hitter in the first game for host Katella (4-3) at Boysen Park. Ted Brown, Jess Evans and Jeff Yourstone had two hits each for Katella.
Ken Madole had three hits and three RBIs for Foothill in the second game, and Jeremy Sherman had three hits for Katella.
Pacifica 9, El Modena 6--Pacifica’s Kevin Ashworth doubled home a run in the seventh to break a 6-6 tie at El Modena. Ashworth was 4 for 4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. Shelby Hart pitched a complete game to pick up the victory for Pacifica (5-3).
Mission Viejo 14, Fountain Valley 6--Derek Gingerich went 2 for 4, including a a 2-run home run, and added 3 more RBIs with a bases-loaded double in the fifth for host Mission Viejo (5-0). Eric Ekdahl went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, Scott Tarrott went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs, Troy Kopp was 2 for 2 and Jon Hayes was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs for Mission Viejo.
Los Alamitos 14-5, Long Beach Wilson 3-4--Mike Scott (1-0) had 10 strikeouts and allowed only 1 earned run for a complete-game victory in the second game to give Los Alamitos (6-1) the sweep of Wilson (3-5) at Blair Field in Long Beach. Mike Kelly had three hits and two RBIs, and Darren Sugiyama scored on a squeeze bunt by Randy Blancq for the game-winning run in the second inning for Los Alamitos.
Bob Callaway struck out nine in six innings of the first game, and Greg Pirkl had three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning. He has 16 RBIs. Max Moore also had three hits with a triple and two RBIs for Los Alamitos.
Westminster 5--3, Lakewood 1-15--Jim Slagle hit a 3-run home run in the seventh inning of the first game to give Westminster (5-2) a 5-1 lead. Winning pitcher Brian Stubbs (2-1) and Ryan Klesko, who earned a save, limited Lakewood to four hits. Ben Mendoza went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Stubbs was 2 for 4.
In the second game, Slagle tripled in two runs in the first inning to put the Lions up, 3-0. The Westminster batters could not get another hit the rest of the way.
University 3-9, Kennedy 4-3 (both 8 innings)--University’s Scott McCorgary hit a batter with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to give Kennedy the first-game victory.
In the second game, the Trojans sent 12 batters to the plate in a 6-run eighth inning for the split at Brookhurst Park.
Pioneer Baptist 15, Liberty Christian 6--Amir Amiri had a three-run double in the fourth inning for Liberty Christian (3-2) at TeWinkle Park.
St. John Bosco 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Tony Woltkmp (3-0) pitched a three-hitter and had eight strikeouts for host St. John Bosco (4-1).
In the Colton tournament:
Canyon 5, Bloomington 4--Winning pitcher Doug Allen (1-0) squeezed home Joe Furukawa in the bottom of the fourth to give host Canyon (4-1) the victory over Bloomington (2-4).
