Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : City Decides Not to Sue Irvine for Rezoning Base
The City Council has decided not to sue Irvine over that city’s rezoning of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
Council members were considering the suit after Irvine voted on Feb. 23 to rezone the base from “airport” to “military” in an effort to preclude future use of the base by commercial airlines.
Newport Beach officials have said they want commercial use of the Marine base to remain an option.
City Atty. Robert Burnham said Tuesday that the city may sue in the future if Irvine tries to annex the Marine base, which is in unincorporated county territory. Irvine Mayor Larry Agran said Monday that the city has plans to annex the area within a year.
A report by the Federal Aviation Administration on the feasibility of commercial flights at three military bases, including El Toro, is expected to be released March 31.
