Boy, Feared Dead in Mobile Home Fire, Found Safe
A 3-year-old boy--feared dead in a blaze that swept a mobile home in Carson on Tuesday--was found unhurt huddled beneath the structure. But his grandmother and great-grandmother were burned in the flames, authorities said.
The fire, which broke out in the 21900 block of Martin Street, had engulfed the home by the time Los Angeles County firefighters arrived.
Concepcion Bristol, 85, was trapped inside, but was rescued by a neighbor, Jason Carrol, 18, before firefighters reached the scene, Sheriff’s Deputy Detta Roberts said. Bristol was burned over 80% of her body and was being treated at Harbor UCLA Medical Center.
Bristol’s daughter, Rosario Bristol, 57, escaped with burns over 20% of her body, but firefighters could not find the child, Gerald Voloso.
“We were running all the way through the house, turning everything upside down--anything that looked like a bundle of joy,” Fire Capt. John Maleta said. “He was found after the fire was completely extinguished, huddling under the trailer. We couldn’t believe it.”
Firefighter Anthony Moore spotted his eyes shining in the dark, Roberts said.
