Youngsters know that sometimes they have trouble reading, but could it be possible that some adults have the same problem? It is possible. Adult illiteracy has been exposed as one of the nation’s serious problems.
ABC’s “Afterschool Special” on Wednesday will tell young viewers about the situation in a drama entitled “Daddy Can’t Read” (3-4 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42).
Edward Albert plays a father who has managed to hide his inability to read from family members, co-workers and employers. After his plight is discovered during a family emergency, his teen-age daughter (Cheryl Arutt) prevails on him to enroll in a special reading program.
“Daddy Can’t Read” is part of Project Literacy U.S. (PLUS), a nationwide campaign by Capital Cities/ABC and PBS to combat adult illiteracy.
