Davison Fans 11 to Lead Redondo to Tourney Title

When Redondo pitching ace Scott Davison takes the mound, batters usually stir some high winds fishing after his crisp fastball and deceptive slider. Saturday night it was no different in Redondo’s match up against Alemany for the Westside Tournament Red Division title.

Davison fanned 11 and held Alemany to five hits in a 5-3 complete-game victory at Redondo.

Both sides did their share of flailing at the plate, however. For five innings, Alemany sophomore left-hander Joey Rosselli matched Davison strikeout for strikeout. He whiffed nine before getting pulled in the sixth after walking his eighth batter.

In between the swinging and the missing, the Sea Hawks touched Rosselli for five runs. Three walks and a pair of singles by Dane McKay and Nate Perry added up to Redondo’s first two runs, before Rosselli mowed down the side in the first.

And the Sea Hawks got three more runs off Rosselli (1-1) in the fifth on RBI singles by Jason Shiotsugu and Scott Taylor and Henry Schelb’s steal of home.

Davison, who made a verbal commitment two weeks ago to do his college pitching at USC, baffled Alemany’s hitters until the seventh, when Indian left fielder Ray Cano sliced a double down the right field line and drove in John Lite to spoil Davison’s shutout bid.

Alemany (6-1) picked up two more runs that inning on a leg single by Joe Cupo and a fielding error by Perry.

The win was sweet revenge for the Sea Hawks (5-0), who were routed by Palisades in the final of last year’s tournament. If it wasn’t for Rosselli’s wildness Saturday, Redondo might have come up empty handed again.

“(Rosselli) was popping it pretty good,” said Davison, who helped boost his record to 3-0 by reaching base all four times he came to bat. “If he would’ve gotten the ball over the plate a little more, we would have been in trouble.”

In the Westside Tournament Blue Division final:

San Pedro 7, Oxnard 5--Hard-throwing senior Rodney Garcia struck out six batters in two innings of relief to preserve a 7-5 win for starter Ben Mandec and sealed the Blue Division title for San Pedro at Redondo Saturday afternoon.

Garcia also chipped in three hits, including a two-run line-drive homer over the 327-foot sign in left-center. Junior shortstop Mathew Rasband also homered for San Pedro (5-0) in the error-plagued game.
