Zarate to Fight Zaragoza in Title Bout

Carlos Zarate, one of Mexico’s great boxing champions in his prime, will try to win the World Boxing Council super-bantamweight championship at the Forum tonight at age 36 against countryman Daniel Zaragoza, 28.

In the 14th bout of a comeback that began two years ago, Zarate (59-3) is making his second consecutive attempt to win the super-bantamweight championship. In Sydney, Australia, last October, he lost a technical decision (head butt) to Australian Jeff Fenech, who then vacated the title by moving up a weight class.

In the second of two 12-round world championship bouts tonight, Azumah Nelson (26-1) of Ghana seeks the WBC featherweight championship against Mexican Azabache Martinez (46-3-2). The featherweight title is also vacant, left available when Julio Cesar Chavez moved up in weight.
