A January exhibition in Mexico City’s Museum of Modern Art featuring works superimposing the face of Marilyn Monroe on the Virgin of Guadalupe touched off protests so severe that the museum’s director has resigned. More than 100 artists and intellectuals issued a statement over the weekend expressing “profound indignation” and demanded reinstatement of Jorge Alberto Manrique. The government, which runs the museum, requested Manrique’s resignation Thursday and he complied Friday. On Jan. 23, about 1,000 people chanting “Long Live Christ the King!” stormed the museum in Chapultepec Park and forced the management to close an exhibit called “Alternative Spaces” by Rolando de la Rosa, 36. Pro-Vida, the group that organized the museum assault, demanded the resignations of Manrique and Martin Reyes Vayssade, undersecretary of culture. It also demanded De la Rosa be hospitalized for “social re-education.”
