About 5,000 lawyers marched on Parliament to demand the ouster of India’s top policewoman, and they vowed to continue a strike that began because police handcuffed a lawyer who allegedly rifled a woman’s purse. The lawyers voted by a show of hands to keep up their paralyzing boycott of New Delhi’s district courts and India’s Supreme Court, which has been shut since Feb. 15. In addition, an estimated 500,000 lawyers are continuing a sympathy strike that has closed courts throughout the country. The object of the strikers’ ire is Kiran Bedi, 38, a deputy police commissioner who has a reputation for stepping on toes. Home Minister Buta Singh has rejected demands to suspend her.
