Kirby Puckett, Eric Davis and Tony Fernandez...
Kirby Puckett, Eric Davis and Tony Fernandez agreed to sign before going to arbitration and doubled their salaries, and Zane Smith lost his case to the Atlanta Braves as the arbitration field dropped to 27.
Puckett, who made $425,000 in 1987, will earn $1.09 million from the Minnesota Twins. Davis, who made $330,000 last year, will get $899,000 from the Cincinnati Reds. Fernandez, who made $400,000 last year, agreed to $875,000 from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Smith, the seventh of nine players to lose this month, was awarded $450,000 by arbitrator John Sands instead of the $550,000 he wanted.
Also settling were Larry Sheets, who agreed to a two-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles for between $1.1 and $1.2 million; Mark Davis, who agreed to a two-year contract with the San Diego Padres; and Ricky Horton, recently traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Chicago White Sox, who settled for $532,500.
