Cars Sidetracked; 4 on Train Injured
BRIDGEWATER, Pa. — Eleven cars of a freight train left the rails Saturday after they were diverted onto a siding and struck a parked boxcar. Four members of the crew on the train were injured, authorities said.
The engineer, Robert Laugherty, 34, reported seeing two teen-age boys pull the switch that sidetracked the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad train an instant before the collision, said Russel Chiodo, Beaver County emergency management coordinator.
Police Chief Brian O’Connor said that two youths had been questioned and released.
The 90-car train, which was carrying auto parts, collided with a rail car loaded with newsprint behind the offices and printing plant of the Beaver County Times.
Laugherty and three other members of the crew were treated for minor injuries at a medical center and released.
