Patrick Troughton; Often Cast as Villain

Patrick George Troughton, a British actor who portrayed a series of malevolent characters in films and on television and was one of several actors who portrayed the mysterious “Doctor Who” in the 1960s, died of a heart attack Saturday while in Columbus, Ga., to appear at a science fiction convention. He was 67.

Troughton’s career included featured roles with Sir Laurence Olivier in the film version of “Hamlet” and with Gregory Peck in “The Omen.” He also was seen in “The Black Knight,” “Richard III,” the 1962 version of “Phantom of the Opera” and the Disney Studios remake of “Treasure Island” in 1950.

He typically was cast in villainous roles and was seen on American television in 1971 as the Duke of Norfolk in the miniseries “The Six Wives of Henry VIII.”

A native of England, Troughton became a recurring attraction overseas as the second of seven actors who have portrayed “Doctor Who” in the long-running British television program. He starred in the show from 1966 to 1968 and was attending the Columbus show because of his portrayals in the series.
