Kaywood Boosts Breathers’ Rights
Anaheim Mayor Ben Bay smokes. Mayor Pro Tem Miriam Kaywood doesn’t.
And as in other work situations, that has caused considerable friction.
On Tuesday, the City Council took under consideration Kaywood’s renewed request to ban smoking in the council chamber.
When the council adopted an ordinance last March giving nonsmokers the right to have smoke-free work areas in both public areas and privately owned workplaces, it voted 3 to 2 to deny Kaywood’s proposal to prohibit smoking in the chamber.
“The rights of the breather have to take precedence over the rights of the smoker,” Kaywood said after Tuesday’s meeting.
Bay, the only smoker on the council, declined to comment.
The issue is scheduled to go back before the council for a vote Tuesday.
