NHL Roundup : Bruins Beat Quebec for Seventh Straight

Tom McCarthy scored twice and defenseman Reed Larson had a goal and two assists as the Boston Bruins extended their winning streak to seven games with a 6-2 victory over the Quebec Nordiques Sunday night at Quebec.

Boston’s win, coupled with Montreal’s 4-2 loss to New Jersey, moved the Bruins into first place in the Adams Division with 36 points, two more than the Canadiens.

Boston entered the third period with a 3-2 lead, on goals by McCarthy and Thomas Gradin in the first period and Larson in the second. They extended the lead to 6-2 as Cam Neely and Keith Crowder scored in the first two minutes of the third period and McCarthy got his second goal at 4:25.

Quebec’s goals were scored by Gilbert Delorme in the first period and Normand Rochefort in the second.

Vancouver 7, Chicago 3--Stan Smyl scored a hat trick and became Vancouver’s all-time scorer as the Canucks routed the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Smyl raised his total to 551 points, moving him past Thomas Gradin who had 550.

Rookie David Bruce scored his first two career goals as the Canucks won for only the second time in their last eight games.

Philadelphia 4, Winnipeg 1--Tim Kerr scored two goals in the first period for the Flyers as they won in Winnipeg for the first time since 1983. It was Winnipeg’s fifth straight loss.

Dave Poulin set up both of Kerr’s goals and Brad McCrimmon scored as the Flyers scored three goals on their first three shots on goal to take a 3-0 lead after the first period.

New Jersey 4, Montreal 2--John MacLean scored one goal and helped set up the eventual game-winner at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak.

Pat Verbeek put the Devils ahead for good, 2-1, late in the first period, taking a pass from Kirk Muller and lifting a 10-foot shot into the net over prone Canadiens goalie Brian Hayward for his 18th goal of the year.

Buffalo 4, Hartford 3--Lindy Ruff scored the winning goal in the second period at Buffalo as the Sabres ended a seven-game winless streak.

N.Y. Rangers 3, Washington 1--Tony McKegney scored two goals and John Vanbiesbrouck made 39 saves at Landover, Md., moving the Rangers into a tie with Capitals for fifth place in the Patrick Division.
