The Canadian government will spend $126 million over seven years to repair the vital Welland Canal linking lakes Ontario and Erie, an official said.

A lock wall collapsed in the fall of 1985, causing an 18-day shutdown of ship traffic on the 2,300-mile St. Lawrence Seaway.
