I realize that music reviews cannot always be flattering, but, for Daniel Cariaga to start out a review of Edita Gruberova, an artist that has been hailed and praised throughout the music world, with the phrase, “she is not pretty, she was wearing a 1950-style dark persimmon ball gown,” is an insult to the artist, to the readers of your paper and to fellow critic writers (“Gruberova in Debut Recital,” Nov. 15).

What does Gruberova’s choice of wearing a ‘50s dress and not being so-called “pretty” have to do with reporting on an artist’s vocal talent? Did Gruberova come to Pasadena to sing leader or was she unknowingly being judged for a Miss America contest with Cariaga as chief judge?

Perhaps Cariaga is wasting his talent as a music critic and should pursue a new profession as a fashion critic.
