A jury proposed an award in the Steinbrenner case.
A non-binding federal jury award would give about $23 million to George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, in a 5-year-old civil securities fraud case. Steinbrenner filed suit in 1981 alleging that business associates tricked him into fraudulent oil, gas and coal securities deals. In a summary trial, jurors in Tampa, Fla., sided with Steinbrenner, saying his investment in Yankee Energy Associates Ltd. was misrepresented with the intent to deceive him. Lawyers said the jury award could become the basis for settlement, or the case could go to a full trial before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich.
