13 Salvadorans Born on Mexican Navy Ship
MEXICO CITY — Thirteen babies have been born on the Mexican navy hospital ship Zapoteco, which has been anchored off the coast of El Salvador since shortly after the Oct. 10 earthquake in that Central American nation, Mexican officials said.
Although born to Salvadoran mothers, the babies were automatically granted Mexican citizenship under terms of the Mexican constitution, the daily newspaper El Universal reported Thursday.
The Zapoteco was sent to aid quake victims because of heavy damage to El Salvador’s hospitals. The navy said about 300 people had been treated aboard the ship.
