A Marine corporal speeding north on Interstate 5 died early Saturday morning when his car crashed through a steel guard rail and plunged over a cliff into the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

The driver’s identity will not be disclosed until military authorities notify his family, Deputy Coroner David Lodge said.

The car was traveling at a high speed when the driver apparently lost control, veered into the center divider of the freeway, then crossed four freeway lanes and crashed through the guard rail, the CHP spokeswoman said.

Witnesses said that an unidentified man dived into the lagoon and tried without success to pull the driver from his submerged automobile, she said.

Lodge said that the Marine apparently was trapped in his car and drowned.
