Couple Rescued After Ditching Plane
LA JOLLA — A Dana Point couple was rescued by surfers Saturday after their aircraft developed engine trouble and was ditched about about 100 yards offshore.
Michael and Arlana Saindon were traveling from the Oceanside Airport to Tijuana when the engine of the Cessna 182 began to falter, witnesses told San Diego police.
Police reported that the two escaped from the plane through a window and were attempting to swim to shore when surfers reached them. The incident occurred about 6:30 a.m. at a popular surfing spot known as Big Rock Reef off the 6400 block of Camino de la Costa.
The Saindons were taken to Mission Bay Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released. The aircraft remained afloat a short time, then sank.
