Brea : 12 Drivers Arrested at Sobriety Checkpoint
Police attempting to combat drunk driving during the Labor Day weekend arrested 12 people on suspicion of driving while intoxicated at a sobriety checkpoint Friday night.
Lt. Jim Winder said the dozen arrests on the first night of the holiday weekend doubled the number made during a two-night sobriety checkpoint over the Memorial Day weekend.
The Labor Day checkpoint was conducted from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at Imperial Highway and Randolph Avenue, Winder said. About 2,700 vehicles passed through the intersection, with officers “screening” about 1,345 of them, he said. During the screening, officers briefly interviewed drivers to determine whether they had been drinking.
Officers pulled aside 23 drivers to administer field sobriety tests, and of those, 12 were arrested, he said.
“We did this previously on the Memorial Day weekend, for two nights, and we got six arrests for the total of the two evenings,” Winder said.
No checkpoint was planned for Saturday night. Winder said the checkpoint was part of the city’s ongoing program to reduce drunk driving.
