All but nine of Houston’s 132 garbage trucks collected trash under police escort to prevent violence threatened by workers participating in a wildcat strike. City Council members asked Mayor Kathy Whitmire to rescind the firings of about 150 garbage workers after about 360 workers, including those fired, remained off the job for a third day to protest pay cuts, layoffs and increased workloads.
