Anti-government demonstrators marched in several Pakistani cities and towns, but their numbers were dwindling and riot police appeared to have gained control over the drive to oust President Zia ul-Haq. At least 27 people have been killed and dozens injured in a week of violence that began on Pakistan’s independence day as authorities rounded up hundreds of politicians opposed to Zia and arrested opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
