Pasadena : U.S. Grant for Library
The Huntington Library has received a $53,380 grant from the U. S. Department of Education to preserve the Samuel L. M. Barlow letterbooks and the Richard Bull extra-illustrated version of the “Biographical History of England” by James Granger.
Barlow’s letterbooks include political gossip about Abraham Lincoln and describe the Democratic party in the 1860s and railroad interests in the 1870s. Grant funds will be used to microfilm the letterbooks, which were written on thin paper.
The 36-volume Granger book contains 14,000 prints and several hundred watercolor and ink drawings. Grant funds will be used to remove the bindings, repair the contents and store the works.
