Wilander Upset at Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON, England — Pat Cash of Australia added to Wimbledon’s string of upsets today with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory over second-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden to gain a spot in the quarterfinals.
Just three weeks ago, Cash had his appendix removed, and he had not advanced past the first round in any previous tournament this year. The women’s top three seeds, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert Lloyd and Hana Mandlikova, also advanced. Mandlikova’s victory came over the women’s 11th seed, Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-4, 7-6. Men’s champion Boris Becker of West Germany beat 13th-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.
