Laguna Church to Show ‘Jesus’ Film

The 1979 film “Jesus” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave. in Laguna Beach. Admission is free and an offering will be taken.

Biblical locations were used in making the film, which was adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke. The movie has been translated into 97 languages and has been seen by more than 260 million people in 112 countries, according to Barry Fiess, spokesman for the Jesus Project. The organization hopes to eventually dub the movie in 271 major languages, which also requires that the film be culturalized as best as possible, Fiess said.

“We’ve run into problems explaining the film,” Fiess said. “In Ethiopia, for instance, when they see people fishing in the movie and eating their catch, well, they’ve never seen a fish before. We have to stop the film and explain what a fish is.”

“Stop Motherhood, I Want to Get Off” is the title of a program offered by Gentle Shepherd Ministries, an interdenominational support organization and Bible study group for mothers of young children. Kathy Collard Miller will speak on the frustrations of motherhood at the 10 a.m. meeting Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church, 192 Orange St. in Orange. Miller is a columnist for Today’s Christian and the author of two books.

The Sisterhood of Temple Bat Yahm will honor two members at a luncheon and fashion show at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Irvine Hilton, 17900 Jamboree Blvd. in Irvine. Miki Sholkoff of Newport Beach and Nancy Marcus of Costa Mesa will each receive the Queenie Schiff-Gortz Sisterhood Founder Award, given for service to the temple, organization and community at large. Respite Ministry is offering a five-week course to train volunteers in assisting care-givers of elderly people. The course will begin Tuesday and cover such topics as normal aging, emotional support, assisting with daily activities, and personal and family issues. Volunteers are needed to offer care-givers time off from the duties involved with round-the-clock care of elderly people.
