Lutherans Cancel U.S.S.R. Trip in Wake of Chernobyl

NEW YORK — Lutheran World Ministries has canceled a May 26-June 18 peace study trip by 22 Lutherans to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe because of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
The Rev. Paul A. Wee, general secretary of the ministries, U.S. arm of the Lutheran World Federation, says the decision was “exceedingly difficult” but many unknowns remain about effects of the accident in the Soviet Ukraine.
