Iraq said its forces overran Iranian forward positions in a major breakthrough in an attempt to dislodge enemy forces from the strategic Faw Peninsula. Iraqi officers said that twin columns advanced to within a few miles of the oil port of Al Faw. Iran conceded that the Iraquis launched a “a major counterattack” but said it was repulsed.
