STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT / SOUTHERN REGIONAL : Tonight’s Games : Fresno Edison, Poway Shoot for Upsets
The long-awaited matchup between the basketball teams of Crenshaw High School and Santa Ana Mater Dei High School will become a reality if the two schools win tonight in the Boys Division I semifinals of the Southern Regional of the State Tournament.
Standing in the way of Crenshaw (22-2) in a 7:30 game at Cal State Dominguez Hills is three-time San Diego Section 3-A champion Poway, which advanced to the semifinals Tuesday night with a 77-74 win over Pasadena Muir.
Poway (26-3) is led by Jud Buechler and Dominick Johnson, the top two scorers in the section. Buechler, a 6-6 1/2 forward, is averaging 24.3 points a game, while 6-6 power forward Johnson is averaging 23.8 points a game. The two combined for 55 points in Poway’s win over Muir.
Opposing Mater Dei (29-0) at 7:30 at Cal State Fullerton will be Fresno Edison (23-5), which defeated City 3-A champion Marshall, 76-64, Tuesday at Fresno City College. The winners of tonight’s semifinals advance to the Southern Regional final Saturday at the Sports Arena.
In Girls Division I action, San Diego Section champion Point Loma (28-1), ranked No. 6 in the nation by USA Today, will play City 4-A champion Granada Hills Kennedy (21-2) in a semifinal game at Granada Hills High School tonight at 7:30.
Southern Section 4-A champion Lynwood (27-4) will play Central Section champion Delano (27-0) in the other semifinal tonight at 7:30 at Mayfair High School in Lakewood.
