College Baseball : UCI Shuts Out UCLA for Third Straight

UC Irvine’s Bo Kent and Doug Linton combined on a five-hitter Wednesday in a 3-0 non-conference victory over UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

It was the fourth straight win for the Anteaters (9-6-1) and was their second shutout. The loss was the third straight for the Bruins (12-7), who suffered their first shutout.

Kent allowed three hits over 5 innings to gain his fourth win in five decisions. Linton earned his second save, coming on in the sixth with two on and two out. He got designated hitter Gary Berman to fly out.

UCLA, which stranded 10 runners, made its most serious threat when it loaded the bases against Kent in the fourth with one out. But Berman grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Tom Baine, who transferred to Irvine from UCLA, was 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Anteaters play Keio University of Japan in an exhibition at 2:30 Friday at UCI, and resume non-conference action at 2:30 Saturday against Washington State at UCI.

In other non-conference action:

Southern California College 7, Whittier 2--Brian Sullivan pitched six innings and allowed a run on two hits as the Vanguards (8-5) beat the Poets at Whittier. Third baseman Howard Wellema and catcher Ron Nelson hit solo homers for SCC.

United States International University 5, Chapman 4--The Panthers scored four runs in the ninth inning but fell short when pinch runner Mark Braverman was thrown out at home plate. He was trying to score from second base on an error.

Brent Ryhlick (2 for 4) hit a solo home run in the ninth for Chapman. John Botte had a solo homer for the Gulls. Mark Bradley (1-1) took the loss for Chapman (6-10) in the non-conference game at USIU.

In community college action:

Rancho Santiago 10, Mira Costa 6--Matt Beltran went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored as he hit a double and a home run to lead the Dons (7-2) past Mira Costa in a non-conference game.

David Salcido (2-0) struck out six and walked one to record the victory. Frank Appice was 2 for 2 with an RBI and one run scored, and Steve Scarsone was 2 for 3 with an RBI and one run scored.
