A lot of people didn’t think Bonita Vista High School team would be a participant in the San Diego Section 3-A girls’ soccer championship game. But Coach Dewey Matthews thought differently. He said his club was as good as any around. Turns out he was right.

The No. 3-seeded Barons upset No. 1 Grossmont, 2-0, Tuesday at Mt. Miguel High School to earn a berth in Friday’s championship game. Bonita Vista will play the winner of tonight’s Serra-Poway game.

“I think a lot of people overlooked us because we lost two games in the San Pasqual Tournament,” Matthews said. “But we had some kids out and had to use several junior varsity players. That wasn’t the real Bonita Vista team.

“Plus, some people like to think we don’t play very good soccer in the South Bay. Well, I think differently and I think we’re proving it. I’ve felt all along that our team could make the finals if we played well.”

Kim Grzanka score the only goal Bonita Vista needed 20 minutes into the first half. Five minutes later, Kim Roach converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0.

The Barons’ defense then took over, and Tracy Gibbs recorded her 17th shutout of the season.

“We pretty much did what we wanted to do,” San Pasqual Coach Bill Bullock said. “Our goal was to shut them down defensively. We figured we’d eventually be able to score.”

San Pasqual will play the winner of tonight’s University-Southwest game for the championship Saturday at San Diego High.
